The Mysterious Rib

The story of Eve's creation holds great mystery which is only revealed in Christ. She was taken from the side of Adam.

21Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept; and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. 22He made the rib, which Yahweh God had taken from the man, into a woman, and brought her to the man. (Genesis 2:21-22)

In most translations, and in our society's current lore of the story of Adam and Eve, we always hear the word "rib" used as that from which Eve was formed. However, in Hebrew, the word simply means "side."

It is used of the sides of the Tabernacle (Exodus 36:25-32) and the sides of the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus 25:12-14). The word itself, צלע, comes from a Hebrew root verb meaning "to curve, to make or be lame." This is probably how it came to be known as a "rib," that curved bone of the human body. But, beyond that, it also points to the fact that it supports the weight of a structure.

The "side" holds up the body, holds up the Tabernacle, holds up the Ark. It supports its weight, and without, the structure would curve or sag. God took one from the "rib/side" of Adam and closed the flesh over that spot.

Adam's body would never be the same; he was lacking support now. But, God immediately brought him the solution. Not only did he have his bodily support back, he now also had the suitable helper that was nowhere else to be found!

The man said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh. She will be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man." (Genesis 2:23)

The Natural State

Man, in his natural state, will never be satisfied alone. He was created to need the woman; not just companionship, which is partially met with other men and animals through friendship, but a support in his life, one that makes up what he is lacking. One created from his own body especially for him.

As mentioned elsewhere, this is why God does not want the man involved in homosexuality or bestality. It is not an arbitrary prohibition, but a matter of fact truth that it is not good for Man to be alone. The answer to that is not another man or an animal, which is clearly seen in Genesis 2. The answer is the Woman, which God build specially for the Man, from his own side.

The Spiritual State

The first counterpart to this natural revelation is that we as individual human beings also need something to complete us. As seen with Adam, it was a matter of a natural need. He would find fleshly fulfillment in the woman. But as we have all found, that is not the end of the matter. We are more than flesh. We are also spirit, created for the pleasure of another.

Beyond the need to find natural fulfillment in another person, we all have the need to be whole in God. It was for His pleasure that we were created (Revelations 4:12), and He loves us and desires us to love Him in return (1 John 4:19).

Without God, we are left without that spiritual side. We bow down, becoming lame, unable to properly move through life. He is the support that we need, which we may receive through faith. He—Father, Son and Holy Spirit—is that which is necessary for us to not be alone spiritually.

King Solomon came to this conclusion, after he had still not found "the one for one" he saw promised by God in Eve for Adam. He knew there was a scheme to be discovered.

Behold, this have I found, says the Preacher, one to another, to find out the scheme; (Ecclesiastes 7:27)

He had 300 wives and 700 concubines but still had not found a woman among all of those! "Adam alone" or "one man" he had found in a thousand (a term also used to describe an innumerable amount).

which my soul still seeks; but I have not found: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found. (Ecclesiastes 7:28)

He recognized that Adam had apparently found his answer, but that he (Solomon) had still not found that equivalent. As a result, men went in search of many schemes, not recognizing there was a deeper spiritual need.

Behold, this only have I found: that God made man upright; but they search for many schemes. (Ecclesiastes 7:29)

Remember, Solomon had been given wisdom above all his peers, or anyone who had ever lived. He was not satisfied with that which had satisfied them. He knew there was more to this inner desire for union and completion in another than simply finding an earthly spouse.

He was right, there was more to be found. But he could not have known the answer, for the revelation had not yet been made.

But we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden, which God foreordained before the worlds for our glory, (1 Corinthians 2:7)

the mystery which has been hidden for ages and generations. But now it has been revealed to his saints, (Colossians 1:26)

The Divine State

Here is the great truth that God had been building through his progressive revelations in creation. Eve being built for Adam from his own side was a prophecy of what He had planned for His Son.

It was not good for Christ to be alone. The Father wanted a helper suitable for Him, one just like Him, made from His own Body.

It is the Church!
We are destined to become the Wife of the Son of God!

God took from the side of His Son in order to build Him a helper. Just as Yahweh put Adam into a deep sleep, so He also ultimately caused Jesus to die upon the Cross. "Sleep" is often used as a euphemism for the death of saints. We simply fall asleep (as to our dead bodies) for a time in Christ, until we are revealed again from heaven with Him.

The saints are being built together into a perfect Helper, the Bride of Christ. We fall asleep in Christ after we die, just as Adam was asleep as God took one from his side.

There is a wonderful connection of these two truths by looking to the words used for "side." The Greek word used to translate that Hebrew word in the Old Covenant (the Septuagint, or most famous Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures) is only used a few times in the New Covenant.

All but one refer to the side of Jesus, that which was pierced after His death. From that side flowed blood and water.

34However one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 35He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you may believe. 36For these things happened, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, "A bone of him will not be broken."{Exodus 12:46; Numbers 9:12; Psalm 34:20} 37Again another Scripture says, "They will look on him whom they pierced."{Zechariah 12:10} (John 19:34-37)

It was that side of Christ that He importuned His disciples to see and even stick their hand inside, that they might believe and live by Him (John 20:20-29).

One woman in my church had this idea of what the blood and water flowing from His side could represent: it was a birth. When a woman gives birth, both blood and water come forth from her womb. When Jesus died, He gave birth: to the Church. Something new was coming from His own body. He was bringing into existence a new organism, something to be carefully built over the millenia by His Father: the Church!

The Side Remains Open

What I learned from reading this passage again, where the risen Christ meets His apostles, is that He asks them to place their hand in His side.

His side was not closed. Remember when God created Eve; He took the rib from Adam's side, closed up the flesh in its place, and then built the rib into the Woman.

The fact that the side of Christ was not closed after His resurrection reveals that the building is still going on!

Until His Bride is complete, His side remains open. God continues to take from that side in order to continue building. As people continue to come to Jesus in saving faith, there are new births. More is taken from Christ's Body to form into this new Bride!

It should come as no surprise that one of the most common words used to describe the progression and maturation of the Church is that it is being "built up" (1 Corinthians 14:26)(1 Thessalonians 5:11). That word is used of the construction of buildings as brick by brick. From that side of Christ we are being built up, like a house.

Just as the word "side" is used of the Tabernacle, so from the side of the Body of Christ we are being built into a House for God, a new Body to become the perfect helpmeet for God's Son.

18Let no one rob you of your prize by a voluntary humility and worshipping of the angels, dwelling in the things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, 19and not holding firmly to the Head, from whom all the body, being supplied and knit together through the joints and ligaments, grows with God's growth. (Colossians 2:18-19)

As you study from the rest of this site, you will find the many ways that we are built up as Christ's Body: by the five-fold ministry gifts, through the manifestations and other gifts of the Holy Sprit, and even by the trials and temptations we all experience. All of those things serve to mold us into the perfect image God had destined for His Son; His own Body mirroring Him, as Eve was to Adam.

This is the ultimate boost to one's self-esteem and self-image. Yes, you are not worthless. You are to be a joint-heir with Christ of all that God has in store for Him (Romans 8:16-17).

You are (or can be) part of the eternal plan God has for His Son, to build Him a suitable helper, a Wife, from His very own rib, from the side of His Body, forever to be one spirit with Him.

But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit. (1 Corinthians 6:17)

The Good Message

As you read this site, you will hopefully come to know Yahweh more fully.

But all of this continuing knowledge is useless unless and until you come into union with Him. I use the word union because it is truly a marriage. It is that deep connection we all seek, for which we most often look in other people. However, the truth is that our hearts will only be fulfilled when we enter that union in fullness with the One Who made us.

This is the grace of God, that He has not stayed distant for us only to worship as Creator. But He has come unto us, even become one of us—in His Son, Christ Jesus—in order to share an intimate union with us. He desires such closeness that it truly will envelope our entire life, transforming us into something new and wonderful.

You may have already entered this union with Him and only seek to know Him better through reading here. But if you have not, as you do read, let this Gospel sink into your heart as you read it now.

God loves you, and has cast your sins into the sea. He has sent His only Son as the Savior of the world—that includes you.

That Son, Jesus Christ, was born as a man through a virgin who had given her life to Yahweh; He lived without sin, reflected the glory of His Father, God, in all His words and deeds, and was persecuted even unto death because of it.

His death upon a cross was the powerful explosion that separated you from your life of death. It remains for you, now, to enter into that death with Him. As you die to the one you are now, a person separated from God from your many sins, you will be born anew, with a nature predisposed to live rightly. This gift is free to you, with nothing you can do to earn it. It is the mercy of God to offer it to you, as He loves you so much! All you must do is receive it by trusting Him to have delivered you. Simply place your life in His hands and embrace the freedom that came through that death on the cross.

The Gospel is that Jesus did not remain dead, but rose again on the third day after His crucifixion! Death could not hold Him, as He was without sin. And so death will not be able to hold you, as you identify with Him fully through your trust in Him. Let go of yourself and confess Him as Lord of your life. The power of His death and resurrection will work in you all that your Creator has destined for you. You will truly enter a new life and experience that intimate union you have been seeking all of your life.

So ponder these words as you read here of this great God—Yahweh—and all that He has revealed to His creation. Let His Spirit testify to your heart that these words are true, that God is Love, and that He sent His Son so that you might receive the life that is unbound by time and space. As you feel that witness in your heart, simply believe and receive what He is offering to you, even now, and begin your new life as a child of God.

Please write to me and let me know when you take this step, as I will be your brother in Christ—we will be one in Him!
