[Walking with Yahweh]:
The Mystery of His Will

Understanding the will of Yahweh will allow us to know what He expects of us, what we are are doing here, and how to change our lives to better live for Him.

Many people struggle with the concept of knowing God's will, especially for their own lives. It begins with scripture, because He has already revealed His will for all creation, including us. Having that as a foundation, we can then live each day by His Spirit's leading to walk out that will in the particular way He has planned for us.

In Christ

Paul tells the Ephesians that this entire age is about rounding up a chosen people who will find their identities in Christ (Ephesians 1:3-8). Then explains that this plan of the Father is a revelation of His eternal will:

9making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him 10to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, in him; (Ephesians 1:9-10)

Yahweh the Father, through what He has done for us through and in Christ—making us new creations in Him—has made known the mystery of His will.

A Mystery

making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him (Ephesians 1:9)

In the days when this was written, that word for "mystery" had long been used something hidden. But during Paul's time, it had begun to be used for something previously hidden now made manifest. Our word "mystery" actually comes directly from this Greek word, μυστηριον, which was from a more basic verb meaning "to shut the mouth." A mystery is something closed; but through Christ it has been opened up or revealed.

Exposed For All to See

This mystery was purposed in God's own self; that word translated "purposed" means to set forth, expose to view, and was used of letting dead bodies lie in state. In that regard, in the Bible it was also used to describe God showing forth Christ as an atoning sacrifice (Romans 3:25).

It is a time of showing for other's observation. God has set forth this mystery in His own self—it unfolds and is seen through Him. It cannot be understood apart from being in Him.

His Good Pleasure

He did this "according to his good pleasure," the same word used in the well-known declaration of the angels during Christ's birth:

"Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men." (Luke 2:14)

This showing forth of the mystery of God's will, done in His own self, is good! That is why God's Son and His apostles call it the Gospel or Good Message. The message we have from God is not one of evil or destruction, but one that brings hope. While many over the ages have feared God to be an evil dictator, an aloof creator, or a kill-joy despot, He has shown Himself to be good.

An Administration in its own Time

to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in Christ, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, in him; (Ephesians 1:10)

God purposed these things to be revealed at a special time in history, in the "fullness of times," or the "completion of seasons." It came at the time of His choosing, when He had finished giving the veiled proclamations given through the Old Covenant, having promised the coming of the Prophet, of the Son, of the Anointed One, Who would bring the fulfillment of that which Yahweh had promised so long ago.

Now that the people had had generations of repeated exposure to the types to come, through the Law and the Prophets, they would be ready for the reality, Christ.

This is accomplished through an administration (οικονομιαν), a word coming from the words "house" and "law," emphasizing it would be done through an edifice by decree. We later learn that this is the Body of Christ, the Assembly of Yahweh, the House of the Living God. The Gospel is the law or rule of living that carries it out. It is not a random declaration here and there by various people, but a systematic proclamation through the Assembly of God by its members, those grafted into Christ by faith.

Repeating all Things in Christ

What a glory to be revealed, that all the truths Yahweh had revealed to His people over the millenia, through angels, humans, and the Law, was to have one final summation: in Christ. The Son of God was to be the final statement, the conclusion to the speech, the last chapter of the book. He would reveal what God had been saying all that time.

Notice that it says all things, whether in the heavens or on the earth, would be summed up in Christ. Together, all those things would find their meaning, in Christ. Apart from Him, they cannot be truly understood; rather, they all point to the truth of God that is summarily contained in His Son, Christ Jesus.

Our Foreordained Inheritance, by Purpose

in whom also we were assigned an inheritance, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his will; (Ephesians 1:11)

Here is where this glorious revelation meets us and becomes a life-changer. We, believers in Christ, have been assigned an inheritance in Him. As the Lord Jesus is the summation of God's revelation, so we have been granted a part in that. The Father has chosen places for us to fill, to be born into, to grow up in—this happens in Christ's Body.

We were assigned a lot, a special portion, where we as individuals do our part to contribute to the overall revelation happening through Christ. It will not be exactly the same as the lots of inheritance given to other believers; each have their own tasks of God to accomplish this blessed and eternal plan.

However, it was indeed planned. Yahweh purposed it along with the greater purpose of His will, what and how we would individually contribute. That "purpose," is from the same word used in Greek connected with "bread," to mean "show bread": that ordinance of God where the priests in the Law were to set out bread every Sabbath before the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle of Yahweh. It was to represent the tribes of Israel, God's chosen People.

Remember, "purpose" here ultimately means a "showing forth." It's not just a theory of the mind, but the actual action of the concept. Just as the bread was displayed, so we as God's people are displayed. We are His purpose in action, revelating the truths He has been proclaiming throughout the ages.

Of the One Working

All of this is not happening spontaneously, like the cliche of putting a bunch of monkeys into a room of computers and having them eventually type out the works of Shakespeare. No, it is not happenstance, but rather a purpose of Someone. It all comes out of Yahweh—He is the Source of this entire thing.

He is "working all things out," meaning in Greek "to display one's activity through the works." God does all this "after the counsel of His own will." Again, it is not something that constantly occurs to Him, bit by bit, but something which He decided before creation, before time began. It is not an accident, not a whim, but an unfolding of a choice made long ago. We are here with purpose, and none can thwart the desired end.

According to His Will

Yahweh's will is so strong, as is He, that it is even personified in scripture:

For it is better, if it is God's will, that you suffer for doing well than for doing evil. (1 Peter 3:17)

His will is the agent by which all of this is accomplished. It happens because His will has willed it, not because we desire it, because of chance, or because any of His enemies have made it happen. Notice the context of Peter's exhortation—suffering. Suffering is a larger part of God's will, not something that happened along by accident; it is necessary because it reveals God's nature as we respond to it.

God's love could not be fully known if it weren't for evil. Although He is despised, rejected, tormented, abused, tortured, and even killed (in Christ), He yet responds with love and forgiveness. If there were no evil, no suffering, we would never know the full extent of God's nature, which is Love. As we imitate Him, and endure the same suffering and evil, responding with the same love and forgiveness, we are accomplishing and showing forth His will.

The End

to the end that we should be to the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in Christ: (Ephesians 1:12)

What exactly is "the end" of all this? It is that we should all exist for the praise of His glory.

We, through our lives in Christ, are a visible and eternal witness of God's fame and nature. This happens as we allow His nature to show forth in our lives, words, and actions, by the power of the same Holy Spirit through which He accomplishes all things.

13in whom you also, having heard the word of the truth, the Good Message of your salvation,—in whom, having also believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14who is a pledge of our inheritance, to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)

Indeed, this entire mystery cannot be showed forth apart from Yahweh—Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They each have a role, according as God has planned, in accomplishing this revelation through the Son of God.

Through Christ, the summation of all things, all believers together reveal the weight of God, what He is about, what He is like. And this is why He created all things, to share Himself with others, which is His will or desire.

"Worthy are you, our Lord and God, the Holy One,{TR omits "and God, the Holy One,"} to receive the glory, the honor, and the power, for you created all things, and because of your desire they existed, and were created!" (Revelation 4:11)

The Good Message

As you read this site, you will hopefully come to know Yahweh more fully.

But all of this continuing knowledge is useless unless and until you come into union with Him. I use the word union because it is truly a marriage. It is that deep connection we all seek, for which we most often look in other people. However, the truth is that our hearts will only be fulfilled when we enter that union in fullness with the One Who made us.

This is the grace of God, that He has not stayed distant for us only to worship as Creator. But He has come unto us, even become one of us—in His Son, Christ Jesus—in order to share an intimate union with us. He desires such closeness that it truly will envelope our entire life, transforming us into something new and wonderful.

You may have already entered this union with Him and only seek to know Him better through reading here. But if you have not, as you do read, let this Gospel sink into your heart as you read it now.

God loves you, and has cast your sins into the sea. He has sent His only Son as the Savior of the world—that includes you.

That Son, Jesus Christ, was born as a man through a virgin who had given her life to Yahweh; He lived without sin, reflected the glory of His Father, God, in all His words and deeds, and was persecuted even unto death because of it.

His death upon a cross was the powerful explosion that separated you from your life of death. It remains for you, now, to enter into that death with Him. As you die to the one you are now, a person separated from God from your many sins, you will be born anew, with a nature predisposed to live rightly. This gift is free to you, with nothing you can do to earn it. It is the mercy of God to offer it to you, as He loves you so much! All you must do is receive it by trusting Him to have delivered you. Simply place your life in His hands and embrace the freedom that came through that death on the cross.

The Gospel is that Jesus did not remain dead, but rose again on the third day after His crucifixion! Death could not hold Him, as He was without sin. And so death will not be able to hold you, as you identify with Him fully through your trust in Him. Let go of yourself and confess Him as Lord of your life. The power of His death and resurrection will work in you all that your Creator has destined for you. You will truly enter a new life and experience that intimate union you have been seeking all of your life.

So ponder these words as you read here of this great God—Yahweh—and all that He has revealed to His creation. Let His Spirit testify to your heart that these words are true, that God is Love, and that He sent His Son so that you might receive the life that is unbound by time and space. As you feel that witness in your heart, simply believe and receive what He is offering to you, even now, and begin your new life as a child of God.

Please write to me and let me know when you take this step, as I will be your brother in Christ—we will be one in Him!
