[Walking with Yahweh]:
Seen by Yahweh

For though Yahweh is high, yet he looks after the lowly; but the proud, he knows from afar. (Psalms 138:6)

This verse literally says,

"Although Yahweh is being high, He sees the humble; but He knows the proud from a distant place."

There is an amazing scientific discovery in quantum theory that reveals that observation affects reality.

Light normally behaves as a wave. Light will go through two slits in a sheet of paper simultaneously, hitting and affecting each other on the other side. This is called interference, as the light paradoxically has an effect on itself by being in two or places at once. As it goes through each slit, it "runs" into itself from the other slits, on the other side, affecting itself and its movement.

However, when light is observed, either by humans or something inanimate like a special electronic detector, it will behave as a particle. In addition, the greater the amount of observation, the less interference the light exhibits. As the light is observed going through one slit in the paper, it cannot be going through the other. Therefore it is forced to go in the direction the observer is looking and it does not interfere with itself as it goes through the single slit. The observation is not directly touching or affecting the light, but the very observation influences what it does!

If you've been able to follow the above description, perhaps you can begin to see the spiritual truth underneath this physical discovery. Being seen affects the very thing that is seen.

In this study, we are looking at the concept of being seen by Yahweh. When He sees us, we are affected. Our intereference with ourselves is lessened and we are forced to behave in whatever way He observes us. We're not in two or more places at once, but must direct ourselves in the way He is watching.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you. (Psalms 32:8)

Knowing what Yahweh is like, that He is love and goodness itself, we know that as we seek to be like Him we will behave in a way good for ourselves. He will observe us and by so doing will force us to become like He desires. We will take the path He is seeing for us, and we will not affect ourselves.

Yahweh's Position

For though Yahweh is high, yet he looks after the lowly; but the proud, he knows from afar. (Psalms 138:6)

This verse begins with the fundamental truth: Yahweh is high. This word, רם, simply means the continual state of being high or raised up, the participle form of the verb meaning to lift or to raise. He is, always has been, and always will be, lifted up far from where we are, both as individuals and as nations of peoples.

But you, Yahweh, are on high forevermore. (Psalms 92:8)

Yahweh is great in Zion. He is high above all the peoples. (Psalms 99:2)

4Yahweh is high above all nations, his glory above the heavens. 5Who is like Yahweh, our God, who has his seat on high, (Psalms 113:4-5)

However, His goodness causes Him to look for those who admit their low position.

This truth is prefixed with the word "although." The rest of the verse would seem paradoxical, which is why the psalmist beings with "although." Indeed, the prefix can also mean "because," indicating that because Yahweh is the high, the rest of the following is true.

Either way, we see revealed a truth that we would not learn on our own; we cannot comprehend how Yahweh being high causes Him to see the lowly, but only know the proud (or high) from a distance. But through this revelation, we learn just that.

Noticed by Yahweh

For though Yahweh is high, yet he looks after the lowly; but the proud, he knows from afar. (Psalms 138:6)

Here is the key to being seen: being humble. This word, שפל, is the opposite of being high, and simply means to be low or humble. We do not boast as though we are at His level—which is the definition of being proud, or "raised up"—but we choose to see ourselves as low.

The Effects of Being Seen

How great is this God, that He does not remain in His high place! Rather, He chooses to observe us! This observation, or being seen by Yahweh, ultimately causes us to go to the place where He is!

Our own interference with ourselves is removed. We no longer cause ourselves to be in many different places, bouncing into ourselves and keeping us from the one path that is right. Because He sees us, we are made to go in the right way.

We no longer cause our own destruction, but are forced to behave in the manner that He and we truly desire.

To be seen by Yahweh is to be truly alive! It is the goal for which we should strive, because we were made for His glory and pleasure, to love and be loved by Him. Indeed, it can be scary at first, because we recognize how great He is and that we are but dust in His hands.

She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, "You are a God who sees," for she said, "Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?" (Genesis 16:13)

Jacob called the name of the place Peniel{Peniel means "face of God."}: for, he said, "I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved." (Genesis 32:30)

Manoah said to his wife, We shall surely die, because we have seen God. (Judges 13:22)

But what is the other option, which most others choose?

Known from Afar

For though Yahweh is high, yet he looks after the lowly; but the proud, he knows from afar. (Psalms 138:6)

When we go in many different directions, rather than the single one that leads to Him and His ways, we lose sight of Him and our reason for being. When we claim that we are high, acting as God, He does not look at us; we remain in our own interference. He only knows us from a distance. That word, מרחק, is the noun form of the verb meaning to be removed, to become distant or far.

The word for "proud" also means "high, tall." However, it is different from the word used to describe Yahweh as being high. There are two kinds of loftiness: Yahweh's and everyone else's. The proud think they are high, and thus like God, but we see that this is not true.

Indeed, it is the lowly who are seen by God. The proud, or those who believe themselves to be raised up or high, are only known from a great distance by God. Our pride causes our distance from God; how ironic that in trying to be like Him (high) we actually become removed from Him!

To be known is not inherently bad, as the righteous are also known by God (1 Corinthians 8:3)(Galatians 4:9), but here it reveals that Yahweh is not stopped from having power over the proud. Because He does not observe them does not mean that they are without His control. He still knows their works and the evil in their heart. Their judgment is already pronounced by their own actions. They are left to their own ways and will perish in them.

The very fact that Yahweh doesn't actively see them causes them to die in their own sins! They even confess that they are not seen by Him, not realizing it is their own execution.

15Woe to those who deeply hide their counsel from Yahweh, and whose works are in the dark, and who say, "Who sees us?" and "Who knows us?" 16You turn things upside down! Should the potter be thought to be like clay; that the thing made should say about him who made it, "He didn't make me;" or the thing formed say of him who formed it, "He has no understanding?" (Isaiah 29:15-16)

10For you have trusted in your wickedness; you have said, None sees me; your wisdom and your knowledge, it has perverted you, and you have said in your heart, I am, and there is none else besides me. 11Therefore shall evil come on you; you shall not know the dawning of it: and mischief shall fall on you; you shall not be able to put it away: and desolation shall come on you suddenly, which you don't know. (Isaiah 47:10-11)

How is this possible? If Yahweh is high, shouldn't those who are high be very close to Him? Shouldn't they be the ones seen by Him? How is it that those He sees are so far away, those in a lowly place, yet the ones who seem to be so close to Yahweh (the proud) are actually known from a distance place?

True Wisdom

This is the wisdom of God that is foolishness to the world (1 Corinthians 1:20-21). We are not God, but were made by Him for His pleasure (Revelation 4:11). Therefore when we claim to be as Him, although we may seem to be close to Him, we are truly far from Him. So much so that He does not even observe us!

What is He teaching us through this? That we are the creature, He is the Creator. It is the matter of man's first sin in the Garden, desiring to be like God apart from Him, by knowing good and evil (Genesis 3:4-7)

Without Him, we would not exist. He is our reason for and power of being (Colossians 1:16-17). When we see ourselves low, as we truly are, He recognizes us and observes us. This affects us in the deepest way! We are caused to do as we were made to do! We gain the ability to live as we should!

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you. (Psalms 32:8)

Our own faults no longer interfere with our direction.

Yahweh, you have heard the desire of the humble. You will prepare their heart. You will cause your ear to hear, (Psalms 10:17)

Yahweh upholds the humble. He brings the wicked down to the ground. (Psalms 147:6)

For Yahweh takes pleasure in his people. He crowns the humble with salvation. (Psalms 149:4)

9But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position; 10and the rich, in that he is made humble, because like the flower in the grass, he will pass away. (James 1:9-10)

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."{Proverbs 3:34} Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you. (James 4:6, 10)

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time; (1 Peter 5:6)

We don't stand tall in defiance but stoop under His authority. In return, He willingly raises us up! This is the proof of His love!

But it is when we claim to be high like Him that we are left to our own devices and ultimately fail by our own hands.

Yahweh has made himself known. He has executed judgment. The wicked is snared by the work of his own hands. Meditation. Selah. (Psalms 9:16)

Give them according to their work, and according to the wickedness of their doings. Give them according to the operation of their hands. Bring back on them what they deserve. (Psalms 28:4)

Woe to the wicked! Disaster is upon them; for the deeds of his hands will be paid back to him. (Isaiah 3:11)

The way of the wicked is like darkness. They don't know what they stumble over. (Proverbs 4:19)

Listen to this revelation from God and profit thereby. Humility, recognizing and accepting your low position in comparison to Yahweh, is the cause of Him seeing you and causing you to become all that He's made you to be. It is the foundation and sustenance of growing in the Lord and walking with Him.

The Good Message

As you read this site, you will hopefully come to know Yahweh more fully.

But all of this continuing knowledge is useless unless and until you come into union with Him. I use the word union because it is truly a marriage. It is that deep connection we all seek, for which we most often look in other people. However, the truth is that our hearts will only be fulfilled when we enter that union in fullness with the One Who made us.

This is the grace of God, that He has not stayed distant for us only to worship as Creator. But He has come unto us, even become one of us—in His Son, Christ Jesus—in order to share an intimate union with us. He desires such closeness that it truly will envelope our entire life, transforming us into something new and wonderful.

You may have already entered this union with Him and only seek to know Him better through reading here. But if you have not, as you do read, let this Gospel sink into your heart as you read it now.

God loves you, and has cast your sins into the sea. He has sent His only Son as the Savior of the world—that includes you.

That Son, Jesus Christ, was born as a man through a virgin who had given her life to Yahweh; He lived without sin, reflected the glory of His Father, God, in all His words and deeds, and was persecuted even unto death because of it.

His death upon a cross was the powerful explosion that separated you from your life of death. It remains for you, now, to enter into that death with Him. As you die to the one you are now, a person separated from God from your many sins, you will be born anew, with a nature predisposed to live rightly. This gift is free to you, with nothing you can do to earn it. It is the mercy of God to offer it to you, as He loves you so much! All you must do is receive it by trusting Him to have delivered you. Simply place your life in His hands and embrace the freedom that came through that death on the cross.

The Gospel is that Jesus did not remain dead, but rose again on the third day after His crucifixion! Death could not hold Him, as He was without sin. And so death will not be able to hold you, as you identify with Him fully through your trust in Him. Let go of yourself and confess Him as Lord of your life. The power of His death and resurrection will work in you all that your Creator has destined for you. You will truly enter a new life and experience that intimate union you have been seeking all of your life.

So ponder these words as you read here of this great God—Yahweh—and all that He has revealed to His creation. Let His Spirit testify to your heart that these words are true, that God is Love, and that He sent His Son so that you might receive the life that is unbound by time and space. As you feel that witness in your heart, simply believe and receive what He is offering to you, even now, and begin your new life as a child of God.

Please write to me and let me know when you take this step, as I will be your brother in Christ—we will be one in Him!
